Understanding ID3 Tags

ID3 tags are metadata containers embedded within audio files that store information about the content. These tags are most commonly associated with MP3 files but can be used with other formats as well.

ID3v1 vs ID3v2

There are two main versions of ID3 tags: ID3v1 and ID3v2. ID3v1 is the original format, which is limited to 128 bytes and supports only basic information.

ID3v2 is the newer, more flexible format that can store much more data, including embedded images, lyrics, and custom fields. Our editor fully supports both formats, automatically upgrading to ID3v2 when adding artwork or extended information.

Did You Know?

The "ID3" name comes from "IDentify MP3." The standard was created in 1996 to add metadata capabilities to the MP3 format, which originally didn't support embedded information about the audio content.
